Rd 3: Tough day for YVG Ariels teams

YVG Ariels' trip to Mentone to take on Southern Saints on Sunday didn't quite go to plan, with all three teams going down in VNL round three.

The Championship team almost snared their first win of the year but couldn't quite close a four-goal gap at three-quarter time, losing 38-34.

The girls got within a couple of goals in the last quarter, with goal attack Gabby Sinclair stepping up and sinking seven from seven, but Saints refused to yield.

The 19 and Under team posted their third consecutive result decided by a goal or less, with Southern Saints taking the points in another nailbiter.

The Ariels fought back from four goals down at the final change and led by three with five minutes to go but couldn't close it out as Saints hit a shot in the dying moments to cap a memorable game 46-45.

The 19s have now had a one-goal win, a draw and a one-goal loss to start the season and certainly know how to keep the supporters on their toes!

Division 1 had a tough day at the office against a very experienced Saints line-up. Ariels took time to adjust against a team featuring three of last year's Saints Championship players and were unable to make inroads against their defensive line, going down 60-20.

All three teams will be searching for crucial wins when they take on Fed Uni Ballarat Pride this Wednesday, February 26.
